Anonymous Employee of South Carolina Wild Wings Cafe Tells Her Side of Racial Incident

We are publishing this as a follow-up to the story involving the group of 25 blacks who were asked to leave a Wing Wings Cafe restaurant in North Charleston, South Carolina.

A woman who works at the Wild Wings restaurant that asked the black patrons to leave contacted Radio Facts and asked that they allow her to be anonymous. She states there are several reasons the group was asked to leave.

You’re only getting one side of story here. I work at the restaurant and your representation of the events is way off base. The group was being loud and obnoxious to both customers and staffers. They kept complaining about their long wait and were talking about how “whitey” was able to get seated, but they were not. The problem was that they had a large group and insisted on sitting next to each other. We only had one area that could accommodate their large group and the patrons in that area were not done. So yes, some “whities” were able to be seated before them, but only because they were going to a different area. We also seated non-whites in other areas too…They made this a racial issue before anything. One of the guests also insulted a deaf white girl because she didn’t respond to one of them telling her to move (she was deaf and didn’t hear them) They were also all standing in the middle of the walk way, making it difficult for customers to leave. We asked them if they could move over, but they said they can stand wherever they want, and if we wanted them out of the way then we should seat them. The customer that was offended was offended by a particular individual’s constant uses of the word “n*gger” When asked to stop, he threw out a long string of racial epithets against one of my co-workers.

Please tell us your thoughts on this in the comments.

There are always two sides to every story, and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Never saw a better of trying to cover your ass with that ‘Anonymous Employee ‘. Too bad that account does not pass the smell test. If the group was so disruptive why did it take a bigot feeling threatened to get Wild Wings to ask the group to leave. I do love when racists lie to excuse their racism.

      better example that is

Because of the way the “victims” decided to slant the story, and how businesses don’t generally stand on principles, but cave to customers. It may be they were totally rude and obnoxious, but only when a customer (income source) complains will they actually move. Both points of view are possible, believable, and probably true. They aren’t exclusive, but both serve the need of the presenter.

Those who have truth on their side do not hide behind the veil of anonymity. When you put that together with the fact that the corporate offices and the restaurant management have not made any attempt to deny that this was racially motivated it just doesn’t have the ring of truth.

If the restaurant had this all going for them to justify what they did, would they not have brought it up immediately? They have not presented any defense only half-hearted apologies. This woman is just another racist who is angry because her place of employment got busted for a racist action.

Who knows what the objective truth is w/o a video or some such.

But it IS interesting that the story was couched as 1 white customer asks for 25 blacks to leave rather than customer (unspecified) asks restaurant to remove 25 noisy patrons (likewise unspecified). Not nearly as good a story, I guess.

Oh, please. Even truth-tellers hide behind a veil of anonymity when there are thousands of internet vigilantes like yourself – uninformed but completely convinced they’re right – waiting to make their lives a living hell on the basis of unproven accusations.

You weren’t there. How are you so certain of everything?

I find it interesting that you think you know so much about me, Agitprop. I am hardly a vigilante, vigilantism is a far right trait and I despise the far right. I do care about right and wrong and will always speak out for the rights of those who have been discriminated against and this group was discriminated against, only a blind and deaf man would think otherwise…of course there is another group that would not see the racism here, that would be all the other racists.

Let’s see – if what she says is true, a video of it (via one of the cell phones EVERYBODY has) would be Youtube gold. Odd, how she didn’t (or anybody else, who were threatened and skeered) video a bunch of people talking like they did – not just b/c it would have kept them out of trouble, but it was so odd talking like they just got off the set of The Jeffersons. Haven’t heard anybody called “whitey” in many years other than the Herzhog guy…

Why, why are you just coming forward now and anonymously. Funny no one in the restaurant has mentioned the group was out of line or loud and inconsiderate of others. Nice touch with the lie about the deaf girl. Wa wa sounds like you’re trying to save yourself or is it the restaurant’s reputation. SMH no doubt!

Of course there are two sides. Mr. Cull and others have their own preconceived notions of what a ‘racist’ is. They are the racists, for assuming without any question that the blacks were ‘right’ and the whites were wrong. Malarkey. I stand up for everyone’s rights. I have many times seen large groups of people, some all one race, others mixed, making obnoxious and threatening noise and commotion. Happens all the time. The hilarious thing here is that to be fair, one must be a ‘racist’… Bunch of malarkey. And anonymous is probably trying to save her/his job since Corporate Wild Wings probably would just fire her/him to save any other canted reporting on these issues, as I always find in these liberal pages. I am very much a liberal, I have fought (literally) with my white friends growing up for racial sensitivity, etc. The knee jerk epithet of racist is now meaningless. It’s the first thing out of many peoples mouths when someone doesn’t agree with them. The whole Trayvon Martin case is another example…whipped into a frenzy because of a 911 call that was edited by NBC to make it sound like George Zimmerman was a racist. Baloney. Never a word about the countless, documented cases of black on white racial hatred, EVER. Please send me a link to one on this website, please. Show me the outrage of this liberal website. Civil rights are for everyone. I wasn’t in this restaurant, but I’m sure that there are many others that were. When Mr. Cull and others talk about cell phone recordings, etc., ask them why there has been no effort by any journalists that I can see to actually track down other customers in the restaurant that night. That would be too much like honest journalism. These stories are nothing but distractions from the real work liberals need to pursue against real racism, and real oligarchic greed. Quit beating this drum, it rings false.

Thank you Henry for a textbook example of being a bigot.

I have no doubt this anonymous woman is telling the truth. I worked as a waitress/hostess in restaurants for 30+years. Large groups of people (of ANY race) don’t often ‘wait patiently’ when kept waiting for a long time. It’s frustrating that often in large parties there is perhaps one or two who become vocal, obnoxious and downright rude, making the whole party look bad. I have a difficult time understanding the hostility towards this person. And before you all decide that I’m some bigoted racist on whitey’s side: Yes, I’m white, however comma. My husband (of 20 years) is black, my children are bi-racial, my sister’s husband and children are black, and we have several other ethnicities thrown into the mix in my large liberal and tolerant family. I’ve witnessed racial bigotry first hand, and have for years. I know this story has two sides, and neither one of them come out looking very good at the moment.

Thank you, Henry and Tracy for injecting some sanity into this discussion. On another site, every poster but one assumed, with no basis in any understanding of the whole context of the situation. Bigotry and misunderstanding are abhorrent on ALL sides and from those of ALL races. We HAVE to move beyond assuming that actions taken against people are automatically due to racism. But I do have to agree, this story is big enough for some good journalists to dig their teeth into.

In all the discussion of this case, I’ve never seen any mention of whether or not the group had a reservation.

What kind of person expects a chain restaurant to seat a walk-in group of 25 at a moment’s notice?

“The group was being loud” – It’s a sports bar, not a library. The atmosphere is expected to be loud with the sound of TVs and the chatter of a full restaurant of patrons.

“The group was obnoxious” – They were waiting for two hours. You should be thankful that after such a long wait, they were STILL waiting to spend money in that restaurant.

“The problem was they had a large group and insisted on sitting next to each other” They ‘insisted’. The NERVE of those customers to ‘insist’ on eating together. I’m willing to guess that if a large group of predominantly WHITE customers appeared at the door (a mostly white softball team, a post-game kid’s soccer party), they would not wait for 2 hours. Restaurant staff would find a way to accommodate them as quickly as possible.

Then it got ugly. It’s too bad that restaurant staff don’t know their history of racial discrimination in the South. Blacks were denied the opportunity to sit in the same dining areas or drink from the same water fountains as whites. This isn’t something that happened thousands of years ago. This is something that their parents had to deal with their entire lives. They were considered to be second-class citizens. Knowing that history, AND knowing how many white people take to the internet to make racist comments (servers have complained on the internet about blacks not being good tippers), restaurant staff should not have been shocked that these customers played the race card.

The restaurant staffer who wrote this post needs to look inwardly. Did I do anything to make this group feel unwelcome? Did I approach the white customers in the same manner that I treated this group? Would I have done anything differently if it was a large group of white customers? I’m not merely talking about words. I’m also talking about the non-verbal communications that people detect when they know that they’re being treated as outsiders.

A Party of 25 is bound to make some noise and there is bound to be 1 or 2 in such a large group that are obnoxious – and waiting 2 hours to be seated would make me get loud – I’d get loud after 45 minutes – You don’t boot a 25 person party (Can you imagine the tip the waitress missed out on) cuz 1 person (probably not a big tipper) is a bitch . . .

  13. Author Image

Your coverage of this is disgusting. On the one side, you throw in commentary like “Indeed it is deeper than that. There was NO REASON for these people to be refused service.” On the other, you offer no comment whatsoever and just present a big block quote. Even the titles of the articles are wildly biased.

Clearly, you don’t know the truth of the matter. Neither do we. But if you had any integrity, you would present the two sides equally. If they were asked to leave because of their race, you’re damn right they should be angry. But having worked as both a) a waiter, and b) a discrimination attorney (on the plaintiffs’ side, no less), I can tell you that neither side ever gives a 100% honest story, and I can almost guarantee that this group was being obnoxious as hell. Whether they would have been kicked out if they were white, who knows.

Odd that white people never see racism. I taught at a school that tracked student transfers racially, but few who were white, parents or teachers, seemed to notice it. White folks in general ( I am one ) think it’s over and race is no longer a factor. Yeah, right.

“can you imagine the tip the waitress missed out on?”

Are you an idiot? have you ever worked in a restaurant? have you ever dealt with a party of 25 black people? I have, let me inform you how that GENERALLY goes. All of them come in, they yell, scream, and treat you as though you are now their personal bitch, babysitter, and whipping boy. They demand outlandish requests, practically spit at you when you ask to see ID for their long island Ice team, and then make demands like ” I want me a well done steak but that shit best be juicy” OF COURSE IT WON’T be JUICY, ITS A WELL DONE STEAK IDIOT… after getting sworn at and ran around the restaurant like a chicken with its head cut off, the party will then THROW A FIT about gratuity (Ya know, that thing restaurants do to make sure douchebags that come in to a restaurant with 25 people actually tip the poor server) to the point that the manager will take it off the bill, THEN to top it all off, 1 member of the party will drop a 5$ dollar bill on the table ( I swear to god its as if they go to the bank just to get a new $5 dollar bill before they go out to eat as if regardless of the total of their bill a fresh 5 spot makes it all ok). Let me tell you something you unaware moron, we make 2$ AN HOUR, a 5 dollar tip on a bill that would have certainly been around 200$ or more is a fucking joke. any of you who don’t believe this side of the story have never worked in a restaurant. Black folks should be ashamed of their general behavior in restaurants. it may not be all of you, but most of you I am convinced go out simply to cause problems. If restaurants cause you this much anxiety stick to mcdonalds bitch.

    • Author Image

Seriously? FUCK YOU. I’m Black and I always tip at least 20%, as does the rest of my dining party regardless of size. Don’t hop on your idiot stream and spew this nonsense into the world on the off-chance that someone looking to fill stereotypes sees this.

I don’t speak for all Black people, but I will EXPLODE when someone else tries to ascribe certain things to Blacks as a group. Fuck that, fuck you, and I hope you never make more than $2 an hour. Fucking clown. “Most of you I am convinced go out to start problems.” Goddamn it, can’t win. Well, if you’re convinced, then of course that’s all you’re gonna see.

      Examine yourself, racist.

You’re the racist sanctimonious sch t for brains. What Walt says is true so choke on it. I waited tables at a Bennigans outside of DC frequented by the brothers & they ate like locusts & NEVER TIPPED. Even the black wait staff didn’t want to wait on their brethren. It was so bad that in order to keep the staff from constantly quitting the restaurant had to subsidize the staff’s tips. So stick that in your bong & smoke it looooooooooooser maggot.

      • Author Image

The race card for stating facts, are u for real?? The truth hurts so choke on it. Blacks are notorious for not tipping. I’ve waited tables at several restaurants & worked w/ plenty of blacks that didn’t want to wait on other blacks based on this. So shove that in your blunt hole & smoke it.
